Tutorial 2: Understanding File Types vs Extensions
Difficulty: Beginner | Time: 10 minutes
Learn the difference between sorting by file type and file extension, and when to use each method.
File Type Sorting:
Groups files into logical categories based on their purpose and content. For example:
– Documents: PDF, DOC, TXT, RTF files
– Images: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP files
– Videos: MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV files
– Audio: MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC files
Extension Sorting:
Creates a separate folder for each unique file extension found. This method provides more granular organization but may result in many folders.
When to Use File Type Sorting:
– Organizing personal files for general use
– Creating broad categories for easy browsing
– When you have many different extensions for similar file types
– For users who prefer simplified organization
When to Use Extension Sorting:
– Professional workflows requiring specific format separation
– When file extensions have specific meanings in your workflow
– For technical users who need precise format control
– When working with specialized file types
